A Foreign Land considers the mechanisms of memory and the mapping of geographies in a Post-Apartheid democratic South Africa; through the lens South African photographer Alastair Whitton explores what he refers to as ‘the architecture of time and the poetics and politics of place’.

This signed limited edition book (fifty copies only) was published by Foto | Black Box, an imprint of Black Box Publishing (Pty) Ltd. in 2022 and includes an introduction by artist Marlene Dumas and a scholarly text by writer Alexandra Dodd, author of The Last Interview - David Goldblatt (Steidl 2018).

South African photographer Alastair Whitton has made several trips to London, New York and Paris. These world capitals have been documented by celebrated photographers extensively over many decades. METROPOLIS is a limited edition hand-made photo-book published by Foto Black Box, an imprint of Black Box Publishing (Pty) Ltd in 2021. This collection of images represents Whitton’s homage to these iconic cities and offers the viewer distinct, and at times unexpected, views of the architecture, interiors and streets of these celebrated metropoles.
